Support the School of Dentistry
Your Support is Crucial
It started with a mission to create a School of Dentistry that stands as the cornerstone of educational, service and research activity. In over 50 years, the School of Dentistry, Alabama’s only dental school, has grown into a premier institution that educates the best students in the nation. Now, you can assist the School in continuing its mission by contributing in a number of ways. By doing so, we will be able to maintain our status as one of the finest schools in the country.
Giving Opportunities
A gift to the UAB School of Dentistry can take many configurations. It can be a check to our Annual Fund. A charitable gift annuity, which helps establish a scholarship. Or a bequest to an endowment under your will. Through your generosity, you are part of the legacy of touching lives and reaching even loftier goals.
Funding Options
When contributing to the UAB School of Dentistry, you have several funding options available to you:
Endowed Scholarships
Creating an endowed scholarship offers you the unique opportunity to make a critical contribution to dentistry, both now and into the future. Your contribution is fully invested in the University of Alabama system, and a portion of the principal’s interest earnings are paid out to a deserving student annually. Each year, your initial contribution remains untouched, yet it grows by gaining more interest.
You may choose to contribute to an existing scholarship. The School of Dentistry has several endowed scholarships, including the David Greer Endowed Scholarship, the Thomas Alexander Endowed Scholarship, and various district dental scholarships, among others.
Annual Fund
Each year, the School of Dentistry requests donations in order to continue its critical work and to maintain its high standards. By contributing to the Annual Fund you provide important unrestricted financial resources, which offer additional opportunities for increased student scholarships, as well as the very best educational programs, research, facilities and oral health care.
The Dr. Mary Lynne Capilouto Endowment
In honor of her unending support and contributions to the School of Dentistry, an endowment has been created honoring Dean Emerita Dr. Mary Lynne Capilouto. The primary mission of the endowment is to provide funds to continue and increase the School’s continuing commitment to provide quality dental care to those less fortunate than ourselves who reside in communities throughout the state.
Class Gift Funds
One way dental school alumni can support the School of Dentistry is by setting up a class project that reflects the interests and character of their class—or by supporting one that already exists. The class and the Dean mutually agree on a class project. Class projects may include scholarships, endowed support funds, professorships or chairs or renovation projects. Class giving is strongly tied to reunion giving. Leading up to and throughout a reunion year, classes make a special effort to raise money for the School in honor of their reunion.
Capital Improvements
The School is continually improving its physical structure and technology. There are a variety of school-wide and departmental renovation projects you may choose to support. There is currently a great need for private funds to help renovate the third floor.

Ways In Which To Give
- Cash - A gift of cash, in the form of a check, is always appreciated, and don’t forget it’s tax deductible in the year it’s made.
- Closely Held Stocks and Bonds - Non-publicly traded stocks (closely held company or family business) may be the best option for you, because it represents your largest asset and it produces little or no income. Gifts of long term appreciated closely held securities also generate a double tax benefit: You receive a current income tax deduction for the gift’s market value and avoid tax on the capital gains.
- Pledges - Contribution plans over a period of up to five years are welcome and encouraged, especially for the creation of named endowed funds.
- Bequest - You may create a bequest under your will. A bequest allows you to maintain control and use of the assets earned during your lifetime. It is also flexible. The bequest can be structured as a specific dollar amount, a percentage of the estate assets or a specific asset. Ask your attorney or financial advisor to help guide you to ensure that this gift meets your personal and charitable goals.
- Endowment - Endowed funds are essentially savings accounts from which only the annual earnings may be spent for the specified purpose. The principal of the gift is never spent. Donors may create a new endowment with a gift of $10,000 or more and may name the fund.
Other Ways To Give
In addition to the before-mentioned ways to give, there are an array of options, such as the remainder interest in a home or farm, an insurance policy, tangible personal property, such as collectibles, art or jewelry, intellectual property, charitable gift annuity, in addition to many more.
Your contributions will make a difference and improve the lives of Alabamians and those throughout the country and the world.
