Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Facilities
Several hospitals in the Medical Center are served by the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. The majority of the patients are seen at the University Hospital, the Birmingham Veteran's Administration Hospital, Children's Hospital and the Eye Foundation Hospital.
University of Alabama School of Dentistry
The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic has 15 operating rooms, a recovery area and complete supporting facilities and equipment. Approximately 50 patients a day are treated in this clinic for exodontia, management of infections, cysts, benign neoplasm, facial fractures, pre and postoperative care and other oral and maxillofacial surgical conditions. This clinic was completely rebuilt in 1975. Plans for reconstruction are underway.
University Hospital
UAB Hospital is the centerpiece of the UAB Health System. Located on the University of Alabama at Birmingham campus among major research centers and clinics, UAB Hospital provides patients with a complete range of primary and specialty care services. As a university hospital, a major center for clinical research, and the home of some of the top medical programs in America, the 900-bed facility also offers patients the most up-to-date treatments and innovations in health care.The hospital was established in 1945 as the teaching hospital for the University of Alabama School of Medicine. Today it is Alabama's major tertiary care center and a modern medical complex serving approximately 35,000 patients annually. The hospital continues to win praise in the community and around the world for providing excellent care. In fact, the book The Best in Medicine ranked UAB Hospital among the top three in the United States, and 74 physicians who work with UAB Hospital earned a prestigious listing in the second edition of the book The Best Doctors in America.
A majority of inpatient surgical procedures are performed at the University Hospital where we have scheduled block time in two operating room suites. Construction has begun on a new Hospital building which will house the Emergency Room, the Intensive Care Units and state-of-the-art operating room facilities. The new Hospital should be completed in 2005. Inpatient surgery is also done at the Eye Foundation Hospital and St. Vincent's Hospital.
The Children's Hospital
Children's Health System (CHS) is a pediatric healthcare system in Alabama comprised of Children's Hospital and a statewide network primary and specialty care offices. Children's Health System operates out of four primary buildings on its downtown campus in the state's largest city, Birmingham -- Children's Hospital (1600 7th Avenue South), a 225-bed pediatric hospital; the Children's Hospital Office Building (also known as the "CHOB," 1630 6th Avenue South); the Children's Midtown Center (1616 6th Avenue South) and Children's Park Place (1600 5th Avenue South). The Children's Harbor, owned by the Alabama Children's Hospital Foundation, was recently constructed on the corner of 6th Avenue South and 16th Street.Each year, more than 500,000 outpatients and 50,000 inpatients visit Children's Health System. Children's Hospital is a private, not-for-profit hospital that treats ill and injured children from across the state, throughout the nation and around the world. Children's Hospital is a research and teaching hospital for pediatric researchers and medical professors at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and is home to a diagnostic center, Emergency Department and one of the largest pediatric outpatient centers in the United States. It also serves as the headquarters for the Regional Poison Control Center and the Southeast Child Safety Institute. Children's Hospital houses the largest pediatric burn center in the southeast U.S., a leading pediatric hematology/oncology center and a kidney dialysis center.
The Kirklin Clinic
The Kirklin Clinic is a member of the UAB Health System, whose physicians and programs have gained national and international recognition for their excellence.
The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic is utilized by the faculty members for their private practice. Senior residents assist the faculty members in seeing their private patients in order to gain experience in the area of private practice. The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic at The Kirklin Clinic was opened in the spring of 1997. This clinic has six operating/exam rooms with complete supporting facilities and equipment. The private practice patient load encompasses the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery including general oral surgery, orthognathic surgery, maxillofacial trauma, temporomandibular joint disorders, craniofacial deformities, oral cancer, and facial cosmetic surgery.
The Kirklin Clinic also houses an outpatient operating room which has 14 fully equipped operating suites. A majority of the same day surgery that requires general anesthesia is performed here.
VA Medical Center
The Birmingham VA Medical Center is a 100-bed hospital serving veterans in Alabama and surrounding states. It is both a primary health car facility for north-central Alabama and a tertiary care referral center for the region.
The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic has three operating rooms plus supporting administrative and instrument preparation areas. A wide variety of diseases, deformities and injuries are presented in the patient load. This clinic was built in 1974.
