Graduate Prosthodontics Faculty & Staff

Our Dean and Chair have designated significant resources and support to the Grad Pros program. Our faculty to student ratio is 1:2, which offers tremendous educational opportunities. We have 6 primary full-time prosthodontists associated with the program and 12 residents. Two faculty members are present at most clinical sessions. Our maxillofacial program has an additional 3 maxillofacial prosthodontists.


Dr. Michael McCrackenDr. Michael McCracken, DDS, PhD, FACP

Dr. McCracken graduated from the University of North Carolina, and did his prosthodontic training at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. McCracken  lectures internationally on dental implants, and is trained in both surgical and restorative aspects of implant dentistry. He currently serves as basic science editor for the Journal of Prosthodontics. Dr. McCracken is active in clinical research involving implants and in basic science research related to the impact of systemic disease on oral health.
 

Dr. Dan Givan

Dr. Dan Givan, DMD, PhD, FACP

Assistant Program Director

Dr. Givan graduated from University of MIssissippi School of Dentistry, and did his prosthodontic and PhD training at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Givan’s area of emphasis is in occlusion, articulation, and full-mouth restoration,  though he also is proficient in removable and implant dentistry.
 

Dr. Lillian Mitchell

Dr. Lillian Mitchell, DDS

Dr. Lillie Mitchell received her dental degree from Georgetown University School of Dentistry. She did a hospital residency at the VAMC in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and prosthodontic residency at the VAMC in Buffalo, New York. After practicing dentistry for 17 years in New Jersey, Dr. Mitchell accepted a faculty appointment at UAB. She currently is course director for pre-doctoral fixed prosthodontics and a group leader in the graduate pros program.
 

Dr. Jean O’Neal

Dr. Jean O’Neal, DMD, MS

Chair, Prosthodontics

Dr. O’Neal received her dental and prosthodontic training at the University of Alabama. Dr. O’Neal has extensive experience in full-mouth rehabilitation and esthetic dentistry. She gives the lectures on esthetics for the graduate program and also does continuing education lectures on this topic. Dr. O’Neal has reached a level best described as expert in full-mouth reconstruction.
 

 

 

Dr. Yung-Tsung Hsu

Dr. Hsu received his dental degree from Chung-Shan Medical and Dental College in Taiwan, and his Master’s degree and prosthodontics certificate from UAB. Currently, he serves as coursemaster and director of removable prosthodontics for the pre-doctoral educational program. He is active in clinical and in vitro prosthodontic research. He lectures nationally and internationally on prosthodontic topics.
 

Dr. Aponte-Wesson

Dr. Aponte-Wesson

Dr. Aponte received her dental degree from the University of Los Andres Merida in Venezuela. She continued her education at UAB, where she completed a certificate in prosthodontics, a Master’s degree, and then a certificate in maxillofacial prosthodontics. She is  currently director of the Maxillofacial Prosthodontic clinic, and also the director for pre-doctoral implant education.
 

 Dr. Jose Paiva

Dr. Jose Paiva

Dr. Paiva received his dental degree  from the University of Pernambuco in Brazil, where he also completed specialty training in endodontics. After serving in the Brazilian Army for 7 years, he continued his education at the University of Alabama School of Dentistry, where he received certificates in prosthodontics and maxillofacial prosthodontics. He is active in the maxillofacial pros clinic and is coursemaster for predoctoral removable partial denture education.

 

Our Staff

The heart of any program is its people, and we are lucky to have support staff who are dedicated to the service of our patients and to our educational mission, even if they won’t allow photographs. We have 5 full-time assistants and 2 receptionists associated with the combined pros/perio clinic.
