In the summer of 2007 the Dental Academic Research Training (DART) program began.  This program, funded by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, provides funds for student and post-doctoral researcher stipends, and for the students also covers a portion of their tuition costs.  All health insurance costs are also covered by this Training Grant.  DART is developed with four tracks: Postdoctoral Scholars, PhD Studies in Oral Health related disciplines, DMD/PhD Studies in Dentistry and Oral Health related disciplines, and Short-Term Research in Oral Health.

The School of Dentistry DMD/PhD program prepares students for an exciting career in dental academics through an innovative integrated clinician scientist training program. Students in the program are allowed to apply credits earned in both dental and graduate school towards a specialized program earning both a DMD degree and a PhD degree in a biomedical science.
