2131 - General Pathology
A comprehensive introductory course in pathology. Fundamental concepts of disease pathophysiology, tissue reaction to injury, and infection are included. The course consists of lectures, slide laboratories, and other audio visual presentations. Department of Pathology
2132 - Microbiology
Fundamental aspects of microbiology, immunology, and related fields. Introduction to the microbial cell, its morphology, physiology, and genetics. Principles of immunology with emphasis on antigen-antibody reactions, the immune response, mechanisms of innate and acquired resistance, and various immediate and delayed hypersensitivities. Study of major infectious diseases, including those caused by viruses, rickettsiae, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and helminths. 2134 - Introduction to Comprehensive Care I
The goal of this course is to guide the development of necessary skills for the dental students to provide comprehensive care for their patients. This is accomplished by the presentation of information and training to develop ethical consciousness and communicative skills, skills in patient data collection, dental-medical record keeping, diagnosis of dental problems and diseases, formulation of comprehensive treatment plans, introduction to specific skills associated with various clinical disciplines, four-handed dentistry techniques, administration of local anesthetics, and gaining clinical experience through delivery of minor treatment to patients. In this course, the composition, properties, and manipulation of the biomaterials used in the practice of dentistry are discussed. Both laboratory and clinical considerations in the use of materials are covered. The specific topics include gypsum products, investments, cements, waxes, impression materials, biocompatibility, porcelain, ceramic-metal restorations, implant materials, noble and base metal alloys, casting procedures, and soldering and welding. 2240 - Preclinical Partial Prosthodontics-Removable
This course provides the student with the fundamentals of treatment of the partially edentulous patient and the basic clinical and laboratory skills required in the fabrication of removable partial prostheses. 2241 - Partial Prosthodontics Fixed
Lectures, clinical instruction, demonstrations, clinical experience, and laboratory exercises introduce current knowledge, materials, and techniques to appropriately diagnose and treat patients requiring crowns, fixed partial prostheses, removable partial prostheses, and combinations. 2244 - Preclinical Removable Prosthodontics Complete Dentures
This course provides the students with the skill and the understanding of laboratory procedures required for construction of the complete denture prosthesis. 2254 - Systemic Pathology
A correlative course of the major diseases of ten major organ systems. Emphasis is on clinical manifestations, means of diagnosis and significance to the dentists as well as structural and functional aspects of the various diseases. The organ systems studied are cardiovascular, pulmonary, urinary, gastrointestinal, hematological, endocrine, reproductive, musculoskeletal, skin, and nervous. 2333 - Oral Pathology
Comprehensive background of the various diseases occurring in and about the oral cavity. Clinical and roentgenographic features of these diseases are correlated with gross and microscopic tissue changes. Close interrelationship between the oral cavity and the body as a whole emphasized. This course introduces concepts of dental occlusion, joint anatomy, muscles of mastication, occlusal correction and rehabilitation, interocclusal records, anterior guide tables, and articulators. The importance of taking complete medical histories on dental patients is emphasized. Instruction also emphasizes that diseases influence the management of the dental patient. 2356 - Principles of Behavioral Science
This course will familiarize the students with basic behavioral and psychological principles as they apply to the practice of dentistry. Students will be instructed in the assessment of and treatment of dental anxiety, dental pain, and the management of patients presenting particular challenges to the dental practitioner (e.g. mental illness, drug addiction).
