Student Research Opportunities

The UAB School of Dentistry considers student research a valuable and rewarding part of the total research effort. We believe it is important to provide students (whether they have academic aspirations or not) with an opportunity to see how new knowledge is generated and to participate in the application of scientific methods in the dental/oral setting.

The student research program has been very successful. Over the past 10 years approximately 15-20 students have been involved each year in the summer research programs. Historically, most of the summer student participants come from the sophomore class. Upperclassmen also participate and often continuing previous research efforts. This program is funded through fellowships from the National Institutes of Health and the School of Dentistry.

The participants of the summer research program as well other students who desire to participate, have an opportunity to present their findings at the annual alumni meeting. The presentations are judged by a panel of faculty members and awards are given in different categories. The overall winners in clinical science and basic science categories are given the opportunity to represent the School at the American Dental Association Meeting and the Hinman dental meeting.

Student Job Opportunities

Limited numbers of paid work opportunities are available at the School of Dentistry during the summer months for interested dental students. Most of the positions available are clinical in nature and require a junior dental student level of experience -- there may be a few positions available for students at the sophomore/freshman level. Historically, positions have most frequently been available in the departments of Diagnostic Sciences (oral diagnosis, dental radiology, advanced general dentistry) and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Other departments will also hire on occasion. Some positions are only available to students who qualify under work-study guidelines. Additionally, there are several work opportunities (available on a competitive basis) for students to obtain summer research projects (see above). Interested students are advised to contact department chairs or clinic directors for more information.

For some individuals, the opportunity to work and observe in a particular area would be attractive even without financial compensation. The availability and details of such opportunities would be best addressed with the department chair or program director in the dental area of interest.

The best way to find a summer job at the dental school is to:

  • Start looking early
  • Talk to students who have worked available jobs in previous years
  • Share your desire to work with as many faculty members as possible

During the school year, it is specifically not recommended that students seek employment.
