4120 - Advanced Oral Pathology

Clinically oriented lectures with emphasis on diagnosis and management of oral pathology entities. Department of Pathology

 

4129 - Orthodontics II

Familiarization with procedures used by orthodontists in the correction of severe malocclusions enables students to select those patients requiring referral. Teaching includes the correction of uncomplicated dental malocclusions within the scope of student's treatment capabilities and clear identification of those complicated skeletal components which require treatment by an orthodontist. While the primary responsibility of the student is diagnostic in nature, students are required to carry out certain clinical orthodontic procedures on patients in the orthodontic department. 4130 - Comprehensive Review of Operative Dentistry

This didactic course encompasses a comprehensive overview of operative dentistry and introduces the students to some of the latest techniques, materials, and research in the field. Department of Restorative Dentistry

 

4131 - Fixed Prosthodontics II

This course introduces the student to advanced techniques and difficult treatment concepts in fixed prosthodontics. Pulp biology is explored as it relates to prosthodontics. The course presents the most advanced concepts in aesthetic dentistry. Department of Restorative Dentistry

 

4134 - Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery III

This course will build upon and continue Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery II. Specific lectures will discuss I.V. sedation techniques, impacted teeth, postoperative care, sterile techniques, management of infections, including I & D and antibiotics, and postoperative complications. 4135 - Periodontology IV

Case presentation seminars. Controversies and new therapies for periodontal diseases. Information concerning when and how to refer patients to a specialist. Department of Periodontics

 

4136 - Pediatric Dentistry III

Advanced topics relative to the delivery of oral health care to children are presented, as well as a thorough review of basic topics intended to reinforce and help prepare the senior dental student for the National Board Examination and practice. Department of Pediatric Dentistry

 

4137 - Occlusion III

This course is offered during the fall term and comprises didactic and clinical/laboratory components. In a two-day summer clinic, the senior student is exposed to the theory and practice of occlusal therapy appliances. Students will obtain alginate impressions, mount casts in centric relation, and fabricate a full coverage maxillary stabilization splint. The splints will be delivered and clinically adjusted in the fall quarter. Department of Restorative Dentistry

 

4139 - Prosthetic Dentistry I

The senior prosthodontic lecture schedule is designed to provide the senior dental student with a systematic review of the essential portions of complete denture concepts. The lectures are designed to make the student aware of the current concepts of treatment in this discipline. The students are presented material that is consistent with modern-day practice involving procedures that are more closely tied to everyday chairside dentistry, rather than fundamental procedural lectures as are provided in the curriculum of the first three years. Guidelines promote an experience in the clinical setting to provide increased complexity and competency in patient treatment. Lectures and clinical demonstrations complement this experience. Second Quarter

4210 - Advanced Biomaterials

In this course, emphasis is placed on the criteria for selection and use of materials in the practice of dentistry from a clinical standpoint. Topics in this course typically include the cements, impression materials, dentin bonding agents, composite resins, amalgams, alternative materials for crown and bridge use, and implant design and materials. 4220 - Ethics and Jurisprudence

This course introduces the student to the basic concept of dental jurisprudence and substance abuse, provides familiarization and perspective in dealing with ethical issues in dentistry through lectures and seminars. Department of Periodontics

 

4233 - Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery IV

Principles of exodontia, including the philosophy of surgical principles and utilization of various surgical techniques. Students are assigned to the oral surgery clinic for practical application of these principles. Experience in sedation techniques and in cardiopulmonary resuscitation is emphasized. 4235 - Prosthetic Dentistry II

This course is to provide the student with information of a more advanced nature in removable partial prosthodontics than was presented in the second- (preclinical) and third-year curricula. Topics include relevant material and information concerning advanced variant removable partial denture considerations. The lectures are designed to broaden the knowledge and understanding of the discipline of removable partial prosthodontics as it relates to the current dental practice. 4237 - Principles of Practice Management I

This course provides the student with a basic understanding of dental practice management and health care delivery systems through lectures and writing assignments. A two-day seminar is presented in the summer prior to the senior year. Department of Periodontics

 

Third Quarter

4310 - Comprehensive Care Program (CCP)

The goal of the program is to further develop the clinical and patient-management skills of the senior dental student in a setting that simulates private practice. Patients are assigned to individual CCP students for diagnosis and treatment planning, periodontal, endodontic, oral surgical, and restorative dental treatment. These several disciplines of dental treatment are provided by students under the direct supervision of supergeneralist dentists and dental specialists. Department of Periodontics

 

4320 - Bryce Hospital Clinic

Clinical rotation with experience treating special needs patients. Department of Pediatric Dentistry

 

4322 - Clinical Management of the Medically Compromised Patient

Clinical rotation at the University Hospital Dental Clinic. Students are exposed to the treatment of medically compromised patients. Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.

 

4330 - Complete Prosthodontic Clinic II

In a comprehensive care setting, students are expected to further refine diagnostic and clinical skills in treating patients needing complete dentures. Complete denture care often involves patients requiring single dentures opposing natural dentition or modifications thereof. Students complete clinical competency evaluations demonstrating the knowledge and application of treatment procedures for edentulous patients. Department of Restorative Dentistry

 

4331 - Fixed Prosthodontics Clinic II

In a comprehensive care setting, students provide clinical procedures in treating edentulous or partially edentulous patients in need of fixed prosthodontic restorations. Treatment is often multidisciplinary involving periodontal, endodontic and removable prosthodontic. Students will complete clinical competency evaluations demonstrating knowledge and application of treatment procedures for removable partial denture patients. Department of Restorative Dentistry

 

4333 - Endodontic Clinic II

Clinical experiences in the Comprehensive Care Program allow students to treat patients with increasingly more complex endodontic problems. Treatment includes diagnosis, treatment planning, emergency and routine non-surgical endodontic therapy, and determination of prognosis. The recommended treatments and required competency examinations are designed to encourage a progression from simple to more complex cases. Department of Endodontics

 

4339 - Operative Dentistry Clinic II

Students treat patients in the General Clinic or Comprehensive Care Clinic. The time is divided between operative dentistry, fixed and removable prosthodontics, endodontics, and periodontics, as needed to fulfill the student's obligations to patients. Department of Restorative Dentistry

4341 - Oral Surgery Clinic II

This course is designed to provide education, training, and competence in outpatient oral surgery. This involves primarily pain control, exodontia, and management of simple pathology. Students will be expected to perform four-handed dentistry with the assistance of other students under close supervision by faculty. Senior students are encouraged to arrange special rotations and assist residents in the Advanced Training Program. All senior students are expected to complete an oral examination. 4342 - Orthodontic Clinic II

This course comprises two half-day orthodontic diagnostic and treatment planning seminars. The clinical component is a rotation through the Orthodontic Clinic to carry out various orthodontic clinical treatment procedures under supervision. The course is designed to educate the student in the recognition, diagnosis, and management of orthodontic malocclusions. Department of Orthodontics

 

4344 - Partial Prosthodontics Clinic II

In a comprehensive care setting, students provide clinical procedures in treating partially edentulous patients in need of removable partial dentures. Treatment is often multidisciplinary, involving periodontal, endodontic, and crown and bridge considerations. 4350 - Periodontics Clinic II

This course is designed to assure, that upon graduation, the student will be able to examine patients for periodontal diseases, diagnose periodontal diseases, and plan and perform treatment, including, but not limited to, scaling and root planing, occlusal adjustment, and simple periodontal surgery. Further experience in the management, treatment, and maintenance of periodontal patients will be acquired. The student will develop an understanding of the role of periodontal surgical therapy in the management of periodontal disease. The student will complete a comprehensive periodontal competency examination. Department of Periodontics

 

4352 Principles of Practice Management II

This course intends to: 1) provide information on OSHA protocol and federal regulation; 2) provide information on OSHA record keeping requirements; 3) describe chemical hazards and their control; 4) provide additional information on managing the dental practice; 5) provide problem-based learning practice scenarios.
