First Quarter

3131 - Clinical Applications of Operative Dentistry-Principles & Techniques

This course is presented in a series of 13 lectures, which emphasize the material presented in the preclinical courses. The material has the purpose of reinforcing and broadening the scope of techniques used in operative dentistry concentrating on the different clinical situations in which they are applied. 3132 - Endodontics I

Lectures are presented during the fall and winter quarters on the etiologies, diagnosis, and treatment of pulpal pathology and its sequelae. The rationale and current treatment modalities for performing endodontic therapy are discussed in detail. Department of Endodontics

 

3133 - Complete Prosthodontics

To provide the student a philosophy of treatment for the totally edentulous patient. To introduce current knowledge, materials, and techniques to appropriately diagnose and treat patients requiring complete dentures. Department of Restorative Dentistry

 

3135 - Dental Radiographic Interpretation

Clinical radiology with particular emphasis on technical considerations and integration of interpretative lectures with related material presented in oral pathology and oral diagnosis. Department of Diagnostic Sciences

 

3136 - Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery I

This course provides lectures on diagnosis, management, and surgical treatment of disease of the oral cavity and supporting structures. Clinical management of dental emergencies, simple odontogenic infections and general dentoalveolar surgery is discussed. Pharmacological properties and the use of local anesthetics necessary for management of pain and anxiety are included. Inhalation single-agent sedation and basic life support (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) are introduced. Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

 

3137 - Fixed Prosthodontics I

This is an introduction to basic treatment and planning for fixed prosthodontics. This course is meant as a primer for clinical procedure. Department of Restorative Dentistry

 

3138 - Partial Prosthodontics

Lectures, clinical instruction, demonstrations, clinical experience, and laboratory exercises introduce current knowledge, materials, and techniques to appropriately diagnose and treat patients requiring crowns, fixed partial prostheses, removable partial prostheses, and combinations. Patient treatment requires broadly based application of materials, techniques, and occlusion with a variety of diagnostic problems. Department of Restorative Dentistry

 

3141 - Principles of Medicine

This junior didactic course introduces the dental student to common medical diseases. The principles of medicine involving coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, neurologic disorders, gastrointestinal disorders, infectious disease, and hematopoetic disorders are thoroughly discussed. The dental student should be able to diagnose and readily identify common medical diseases, which often complicate management of the dental patient. Understanding principles of medicine requires a basic fund of knowledge in physiology, biochemistry, gross anatomy, and pathology. This particular course builds upon physical diagnosis. 3150 - Physical Diagnosis II (ICLS)

In the past, Physical Diagnosis encompassed two quarters. The last half of the second quarter the dental student completed Intermediate Cardiac Life Support. This course is well designed for the dentist. Advanced cardiac life support is appropriate for the physician. Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

 

3151 - Periodontology III

Lectures presented on all phases of periodontal surgery and special topics of periodontal therapy. Students are assigned to the Periodontal Clinic for instruction in diagnosis and treatment planning. Students are responsible for periodontal health of patients assigned to them in the second-floor restorative clinic. Department of Periodontics

 

3160 - Principles of Oral Diagnosis

Lecture series on the diagnostic process, extra and intraoral examination of the patient, application of basic sciences in the diagnostic process, and management of the medically compromised patient. Department of Diagnostic Sciences

 

3161 - Orthodontics I

Instruction includes the relevant areas of applied growth and development, diagnostic methods, biomechanics, and techniques. Students learn to identify, describe, classify and differentiate occlusal problems in children and adults. Preventive, interceptive, and corrective procedures are taught, as well as recognition of severe problems which require patients to be referred to an orthodontist. A clinical component in the third year requires students to carry out orthodontic treatment procedures on patients in the orthodontic clinic. Department of Orthodontics

 

3162 - Pain and Anxiety Control II

This junior course introduces and familiarizes the student with pain and anxiety control, particularly as it relates to clinical dentistry. The objective is to discuss the different concepts of analgesia, local anesthesia, conscious sedation, and general anesthesia. The course will discuss various pharmacological agents and physiologic effects. The student will develop a working knowledge of nitrous oxide sedation. They will become familiar with I.V. sedation techniques and appropriate monitoring. Special emphasis will be directed to patient management, including non-pharmacological agents and the use of controlled narcotic substances. Proficiency in local anesthesia will be expected and will be evaluated by a clinical exam. Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

 

3163 - Introduction to Pediatric Dentistry

This course presents basic information unique to the child patient including such topics as the normal development of the primary dentition and prevention. It is intended to create an awareness for the need of the delivery of oral health care to children. Department of Pediatric Dentistry

3244 - Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery II

This course will introduce basic surgical techniques in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery, with special emphasis on the simple and surgical extraction of teeth. This course will explain basic techniques in emergency medicine with particular emphasis on medical emergencies in the dental office. Specific lectures will deal with wound healing, suture technique, principles of surgery, instrumentation, surgical exodontia, prescription writing, and introductory pain management, including local anesthesia and nitrous oxide. 3247 - Partial Prosthodontics

This course will provide the student with

  • an opportunity to develop technical and clinical skills, competency, and judgment in the discipline of removable partial prosthodontics to a level suitable for those practicing removable prosthodontics in a general dental practice.
  • basic diagnostic and treatment planning skills appropriate for removable partial prosthodontics.

The course will also prepare the student for:

3320 - Advanced Clinical Operative Dentistry

This course is designed to present the students with advanced techniques in the field of operative/restorative dentistry. The students are exposed to the most current restorative materials, techniques, and some research findings in the field. Department of Restorative Dentistry

3230 - Aging I (Geriatric Dentistry)

Lectures on aging and gerontology and treatment of geriatric dental patients. Department of Restorative Dentistry

 

3327 - Implantology

Introduces the student to the art and science of multidisciplinary dental implantology. The biological, metallurgical, and scientific basis for implantology is presented. Emphasis is on patient evaluation, diagnosis and treatment planning, implant selection, surgical procedures, prosthodontic restorations, patient management, and follow-up care. Lecture presentations and audiovisuals are presented by faculty from the departments of biomaterials, oral surgery, periodontology, and restorative dentistry. Department of Restorative Dentistry

 

3331 - Patient Management & Quality Assurance I

The purpose of this course is to guide and evaluate students in the areas of adherence to infection control and clinic policy guidelines, patient management and delivery of comprehensive care in a timely manner, patient record accuracy and management, and adherence to accepted quality assurance guidelines. The course includes a clinical rotation for each student to observe and evaluate clinical staff, students, and faculty for their adherence to infection control and safety guidelines. 3333 - Complete Prosthodontics Clinic I

Students are expected to treat completely edentulous patients in a clinical setting under guidance, supervision and evaluation of faculty. Students apply didactic and pre-clinical laboratory concepts in developing knowledge and clinical treatment skills for patients needing complete dentures. Department of Restorative Dentistry

3337 - Dental Nutrition

Nutrition and its relationship to oral health and disease, techniques for assessing the nutritional status of dental clients, nutrition support techniques and products for dental patients who have special dietary needs, and the dentist's role in nutrition counseling are discussed. 3338 - Community and Public Health Dentistry

This course provides 1) an understanding of major concepts involved in planning, implementation, and evaluation of community and dental public health programs; 2) an understanding of health policy program management and administration, research methods, oral health promotion and disease prevention, and oral health services delivery systems; 3) an understanding of the leadership role and responsibility the dental student will have as a health care professional in the community; 4) preparation for the community dentistry rotation during the senior year. 3339 - Endodontic Clinic I

Clinical assignments and competency examinations are progressive in nature to allow students to treat patients with endodontic problems from low to moderate complexity. Department of Endodontics

 

3341 - Oral Surgery Clinic I

All students will rotate through the Oral Surgery Clinic. On the first rotation, students will primarily observe, assist, and learn basic techniques of exodontia, sterile technique, and local anesthesia. Special rotations and case studies will be provided. 3353 - Fixed Prosthodontics Clinic I

Students will learn to treat patients requiring crowns and uncomplicated fixed prostheses. Students will apply didactic and preclinical laboratory concepts in developing knowledge and clinical treatment skills for fixed prosthodontic clinical treatments. Department of Restorative Dentistry

 

3359 - Pediatric Dentistry II

This course concentrates on complex diagnostic considerations, normal physical developmental milestones in children, and social issues such as child abuse and the treatment of the handicapped. Department of Pediatric Dentistry

 

3360 - Operative Dentistry Clinic I

The clinic is designed to allow students to apply the knowledge and skill necessary to conduct an effective clinical examination, and to apply skills acquired in operative dentistry to diagnose and prescribe operative treatment for individual teeth that is consistent with preservation of oral health and the protection of intact dental and oral tissues. It also provides the basis for a sequenced treatment plan in operative dentistry that is consistent with the patient's individual needs and the comprehensive care of that patient. 3361 - Oral Diagnosis and Treatment Planning Clinic

Throughout the year, regularly scheduled assignments to the oral diagnosis clinic allow for practical application of techniques for examination, diagnosis, and treatment planning of dental patients. All students also participate in weekly pathology and case-based clinical seminars. Department of Diagnostic Sciences

 

3362 - Orthodontic Clinic I

This course extends over three quarters. The didactic component is comprised of four half- day seminars on orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. In addition, part of the seminar period will include construction of soldered lingual arches on dentoforms. The clinical component is a scheduled rotation of junior students through the Orthodontic Clinic. Students will perform clinical procedures under supervision. The course is designed to educate students in the recognition, diagnosis, and management of orthodontic malocclusions. Department of Orthodontics

 

3364 - Occlusion II

This didactic course is divided into two parts. Part I consists of didactic, clinical, and laboratory sessions given during the junior clinic orientation prior to the fall quarter. These sessions review clinical and laboratory procedures for diagnostic impressions, jaw relation records, and use of the dental articulator for mounting casts. Part II (spring quarter) introduces concepts of the diagnosis, treatment, and management of temporomandibular disorders and occlusal parafunction. Department of Restorative Dentistry

 

3365 - Principles of Patient Management

Students are introduced to the many facets of patient management both from the patient's point of view as well as the providers. Subjects are discussed by dentists, legal professionals, and clinical psychologists relating to normal and abnormal behavior, stress and stress control, compliance, and adherence. 3366 - Oral Pathology, Oncology Clinic

This rotation involves an intense three-day exposure to practical oral pathology, including histopathology, oral pathology clinic, biopsies in an oral surgery office, dental oncology, and head and neck cancer clinic. Department of Pathology

 

3369 - Oral Radiology Clinic

Clinical assignment in which the students learn and apply radiographic techniques. Department of Diagnostic Sciences

 

3372 - Partial Prosthodontics Clinic I

Students apply didactic concepts and preclinical laboratory skills to successfully provide treatment to partially edentulous patients. Such treatment is often interdisciplinary, involving operative dentistry, crown and bridge, and subsequently removable partial dentures. Patient treatment requires diagnostic judgment and sequential treatment procedures and is evaluated and supervised by faculty. Department of Restorative Dentistry

 

3380 - Pediatric Dentistry Clinic I

This course includes the teaching of basic skills in pediatric dentistry restorative treatment and the management of children in the clinical setting. Department of Pediatric Dentistry

 

3383 - Periodontics Clinic I

This course will introduce the junior students to the clinical management of periodontal diseases. The students will learn how to diagnose periodontal diseases, identify primary and contributing etiological factors, and establish a prognosis for teeth with periodontal disease. Strong emphasis will be on the development of a plan for periodontal therapy and the treatment of patients with mild to moderate periodontitis. The student will be expected to evaluate the treatment results and provide maintenance therapy for all patients treated.
