Dental Assisting Program General Information

The Program

A successful career in dental assisting is dependent upon a good academic foundation, a pleasing personality and dedication to the concept of patient care.

The Dental Assisting Program at the University of Alabama School of Dentistry is designed to provide the necessary educational background and training for graduates to become proficient in the execution of their duties and knowledgeable about the delivery of dental health care. Upon successful completion of studies the graduate will receive a certificate of proficiency issued by the University of Alabama School of Dentistry.

The Dental Assisting Program is approved by The Alabama State Board of Dental Examiners.

What a Dental Assistant Does

The duties of the dental assistant, an important member of the dental health team, are varied, interesting and challenging. Major responsibilities include assisting chairside with the dentist during patient treatment, infection control, preparing dental radiographs, and performing certain laboratory procedures. Additional responsibilities may include making appointments, keeping records, and supervising general office procedures. Under the direct supervision of the dentist, the assistant may also carry out certain phases of the treatment.
