International Dentist Program
International Dentist Program
The International Dentist Program (IDP) offers foreign-trained dentists the opportunity to earn a DMD degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry. Our program is five semesters long, and consists of one semester of pre-clinical activities followed by 2 years of clinical training. In the first semester, students are introduced to UAB patient care philosophy and dental techniques. Students who participate in this program will represent a great diversity of training, background, and experience levels. For this reason, some standardization is necessary. Students will spend time in pre-clinical training, and in small group seminar activities.
The next 2 years is spent primarily in clinical activities. The first year, international students are supervised as a group by the program director. In the second year of clinical activity, students are assigned to a group with the traditional pre-doctoral students. Throughout the clinical years, students participate in didactic courses with the traditional students, and small-group seminars within the international program.
Each candidate who successfully completes the program will receive the DMD degree. This will qualify the student for licensure application in most regions of the United States.
